“My Husband Doesn’t Allow Me Cook” – Funke Akindele

Top actress, Funke Akindele in a recent interview with Punch spoke on the downsides of her career, her latest projects, life as a married woman and more

Read below:
On what she is up to presently:
“I have been filming a new television series called In Da Streetz. It is about the entertainment industry and how people try to survive. It also dwells on the hustle and bustle in the ghetto. It would be full of glitz, glamour and it’s a production that has deep content,’’
“My new project is music-oriented, so I am working with people like K-Switch, Mo-Easy, Lydia Forson, Linda Ejiofor, Tina Mba, Kunle Coker, and Freeze of Cool FM. It is just a group of people coming together to do something different on television through Scene One Productions, where I am the CEO. My mission is for people to enjoy wholesome entertainment.”
“My husband is a pioneer in the music industry, so he has been there. He gave me the storyline and the synopsis which I developed and edited,
On how she switched from law to entertainment:
“I recall that my father wanted me to study Law because he wanted me to become a lawyer. Even though he had his reservations about acting, I was undeterred,”
On her career :
“I am grateful to God for the opportunities that have come my way as an actress. When I started out, it wasn’t easy and there were lots of challenges. I have been acting and producing films before I came out with Jenifa. The movie was a commercial success and following it up with Jenifa’s Dairy, was a like an extension of the goodwill Jenifa, enjoyed.”
On criticisms she received before starting Jenifa series:
“If you have an idea, sleep, eat and drink it until you make a reality of it. Jenifa is a brand that I love so much. I didn’t even want to come up with the series but I realised that a lot of people like the brand. When I go out, I speak to a lot of young people. They like Funke quite alright but when I give them that variant of English, Jenifa is known for, the reaction is priceless,”
On production of  Jenifa’s Dairy:
“I am tired of producing the series because it is time-consuming  but  my husband says that I cannot stop now because my  fans love it, people are celebrating me, I have won awards and every day, they talk about  me because  they are not  tired. People say it’s the best TV series, so I cannot stop.”
On the downsides of acting:
“The gospel group, Mary Mary,  inspires.  Whenever I listen to their songs, I am inspired. One of their songs  goes thus: ‘I just can’t give up now. I’ve come too far from where I started from, nobody told me that road is going to be easy.’ The song teaches me that good things don’t come easy, you just have to push. There are many times when they write about me in the newspapers and magazines. I just say to myself that it’s not their fault, it’s because I am acting. At such times, I want to quit acting but then, I look into the mirror and say to myself,  you have it in you, don’t give up and bury your talents. This is why I use my talent as a tool to pass messages across to people,’’
On life as a married woman:
“Before I met my husband, I used to work on  Sundays, but he always says that I need to rest. Our chef leaves on Saturday  mornings  to see his family, so whenever  I want to cook, my husband tells me not to do so and we eat out.  We  do that very often. Now, I enjoy my life and  I rest.’’

On her likes and dislikes:
“People call me Margaret Thatcher, because I do not like indiscipline. You must not be rude, we are Nigerians and we have a culture and we are well-trained. I am Yoruba girl, so you have to be respectful. I always tell people that never believe that because you are made, you can bring people down. Even if you are up there, remain level-headed so you don’t fall,’’

“I Can’t Speak In My Mother-Tongue” – Jackie Appiah

Ghanian born Nollywood actress, Jackie Appiah who won Best Actress in a Leading Role at the 2010 Africa Movie Academy Awards has revealed why she can’t speak her mother-tongue, Twi (Akan) in a recent chat with HighlifeToday.

The role interpreter who hails from the Ashanti Region revealed that due to where she was brought up and the kind of job she does, many see her to be someone who has lost touch with her local dialect.
In her words; ‘ “I can speak twi, I understand but I’m not able to flow as others do, maybe due to my upbringing. I have a Canadian background so that could be one of the reasons.
Another is that I mingle with people who speak English and that also is not helping me but don’t worry I know my roots. For all you know, I might produce a twi movie one of these days,”

‘I Fell Out With My Daughter When I Answered God’s Call’ – Patience Ozokwor

Patience Ozokwor, a veteran Nollywood actress popularly known as Mama G is well known for her role as wicked mother-in-law, wicked step mother among other wicked roles

The actress who last year revealed she had an encounter with Christ last January and became born again has disclosed that she nearly fell out with her daughter when she answered God’s call to go into evangelism to win souls for God.
Mama G, as she is popularly called, made the revelation while preaching at the Power House Interdenominational Worship Centre Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, during the grand finale of the church’s 40-day fasting and prayer programme.
The actress said the incident did not weigh her down or discourage her from going ahead with her assignment as she has won many souls for God.
This is my one year in the service of God. God called me to work for him and I obeyed immediately. When I answered the call, my daughter queried me. She asked why I decided to go into evangelism and I explained to her. She misunderstood me and we had issues.
“I kept working for God. I have won many souls since last year and I am happy for it,”
Mrs. Ozokwor advised teenage girls to preserve their bodies, warning that many of them may end up getting pregnant during this year’s valentine. She further said evil acts should not be associated with Valentine if at all Valentine is worthy of celebration.

“Valentine is not in the scripture and anything that is not in the bible should be discarded”. “Who is Valentine? The one that suffered for me and you is Jesus who should be celebrated.
“If the kind of love that Valentine has shown to people is for people to make love to each other without getting married, then it is against the will of God.
“People should show love to their fellow human beings on daily basis. Your neighbor is the first person that you should show love.
“Everyday is love day for me and there is no special day that is meant for love. What people are doing today in the name of love is lust.”

Tiwa Savage: Why People Were Scared Of Investing In Me
Mavin Records star, Tiwa Savage has gone down memory lane, recounting how she found it difficult to convince investors to put their money on her when she newly relocated to Nigeria to launch her career.
The Los Angeles, US born singer also told CNN in a chat that she chose to do her music in Nigeria rather than in her land of birth because of the irresistible pull of her roots.
She said, When I first moved to Nigeria, I got a lot of people discouraging me about being a female artist, and a lot of people didn’t want to invest money or time because they didn’t think I was lucrative, female artists are huge in other parts of the world. It shouldn’t be different in Africa.”

She also noted that her talents were already well appreciated in the US and UK before she returned home, giving her confidence that she could cut it. She said that people would ask her, “Where’s that from?’ I’d say it’s Nigerian, West African, and they would say, ‘You’re African?’ and fascinated that I was straight from the Motherland… This was a lightbulb moment. These people were interested in Africa, and here I was running from it.
“It’s overwhelming, as well. My family is from here… It’s a great feeling, but sometimes you really just want to run, get something and go back home.
“Believe in yourself, and believe in Africa,” she added.
She is currently in the United states where, ahead of Sunday’s Grammy Awards, Essence Magazine held their annual Essence Black Women in Music event on February 9 at the NeueHouse Hollywood in Los Angeles, California.

Starboy

201618 songsR&B / SoulR&BUniversal Republic Records
The extent of the 2015 Weeknd commercial rebound, symbolized by platinum certifications for Beauty Behind the Madness and all four of its singles, didn't merely embolden Abel Tesfaye. On this follow-up's fourth track, a blithe midtempo cut where Tesfaye takes a swipe at pretenders while boasting about drinking codeine out of one of his trophies, the level of success is a source of amusement. He notes the absurdity in taking a "kids' show" award for "Can't Feel My Face," in which he was "talkin' 'bout a face numbin' off a bag of blow." The track actually lost to Adele's "Hello," but it clearly, somewhat comically, reached an unintended demographic. It comes as no surprise that Tesfaye, on his third proper album, doesn't attempt to optimize the reach of his biggest hit by consciously targeting youngsters. He sings of being a "Starboy" with access to a fleet of sports cars, but he's a "motherfuckin' starboy," one who is 26 years old and proud to observe his woman snort cocaine off his fancy table. While Starboy often reflects an increased opulence in the personal and professional aspects of Tesfaye's life -- from more upscale pronouns to expensive collaborations with the likes of Daft Punk (two) and "Can't Feel My Face" producers Max Martin and Ali Payami (four) -- the dark moments of vulnerability are pitch black. Lines like "I switch up my cup, I kill any pain" could have come from Tesfaye's mixtape debut, yet there are new levels of torment. In "Ordinary Life," he considers driving off a Mulholland Drive cliff, James Dean style, wishing he could swap everything for angel status. It's followed with "Nothing Without You," a ballad of toxic dysfunction. He asks his lover if she'd feel guilty for not answering his call if he happened to die that night. It's not all dread and depravity. There's some sense of joy in a one-night stand, and an echo of "Say Say Say" Michael Jackson, on the Luomo-ish house track "Rockin'." Contrition is shown in the slick retro-modern disco-funk of "A Lonely Night." Ironically enough, in the aching "True Colors," Tesfaye sounds a little insecure about a lover's past. The album's lighter, comparatively sweeter parts -- the Tears for Fears-sampling/Romantics-referencing "Secrets" and the breezy and only slightly devilish "I Feel It Coming" among them -- are all welcome highlights. When pared down to its ten best songs, Starboy sounds like Tesfaye's most accomplished work. ~ Andy Kellman
