Segun Olulade a Lagos lawmaker, on Thursday, advised the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, on the negative implications of Big Brother Naija on the nation’s culture and youths.

Olulade, Chairman, Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Health Services, in a statement, said: “We have culture and tradition in this country that we must not allow to die.

The FG needs to reconsider the implications of Big Brother Naija on our culture and youths. The content of Big Brother Naija reality show is alien to our culture. This show is contrary to the rich cultural values we are trying to promote and bring to the front burner.

.

.

It is sad that our young children including adults are made to watch such content. This kind of programme promotes obscenity and immorality. We must not encourage such if our hallowed cultural heritage would be preserved. 

.

.

We cannot prevent our inquisitive young ones from watching the obscene displays that permeate the show. I think the Nigeria Broadcasting Commission (NBC) should, without delay, stop this programme if this government means business in the promotion of our cultural values.

.

The show does not add any value to our education, social and economic life. It is a big mockery of Nigerian culture and tradition,’’ Olulade said. According to him, the inmates in the show, being Nigerians, should have portrayed the Nigerian cultural heritage instead of bastardising it.

He said that a programme of the calibre of Big Brother Naija was capable of causing distractions to the Nigerian youths and affecting many families. “The implication of allowing the children to keep watching this show can be negative on this. “Our children should not be allowed to be corrupt because this may affect their future aspiration,” he said.

Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu, yesterday lamented that an era whereby somebody spent the first three year under the Pres. Obasanjo administration and turned many public corporation to his personal properties had gone forever. 

The monarch therefore, vowed to work against any corrupt individual from emerging the President of Nigeria, thereby canvassing support for the present leadership of EFCC.

He stated this yesterday at the inauguration of Nigerian Women Against Corruption Initiative at the Haven Event Centre, Ikeja, calling mass action against corrupt leaders.

“I insist that this is not era for somebody who spent the first three years under the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo making money and turning public corporations to his own.

He is planning to come back to be the President of this country again. I will work against his ambition. I mean it and I mean it. By God’s grace, it shall not be so,” the monarch said.

Akiolu canvassed support for the EFCC Chairman, Mr. Ibrahim Magu, noting that it was absolutely necessary for all to support the fight against graft and stop corrupt leaders from emerging Nigerian president. 

.He, however, commended Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, saying: “If a man can achieve that much in office under two years, it shows clearly that there is still hope for this country and whether we like it or note, we should thank God and commend Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

If I did not put down my foot from 1999 to 2003 to ensure that nobody pushed the government of Lagos State aside, they would have taken government from us that time. Contestants in the Big Brother Naija house got a surprise guest in the person of actor John Okafor aka Mr Ibu.

Visibly excited, the housemates all made sure they gave him a hug welcoming him into the house. In his trademark witty statements, Mr Ibu went around the house cracking each housemate up pointing out to Thin Tall Tony that “he looked like a pole.”

Mr Ibu then went on to advice the housemates that they should make sure they follow up their passions when they leave the house even if they don’t win.

He then added that the housemates are being proud ambassadors of Nigeria and that for him, they have made him very proud.

Promising to help anyone of them who decides to go into acting, he said all they need to do is link up with him when they leave the house. More surprising was when he was invited into the diary room by Biggie and asked to lead the housemates in a short drama.

GIRL SETS UP HER FRIEND TO BE GANG RAPED BY 10 MEN IN EKITI

The Ekiti State Police Command has arrested a student of a college of technology in the state, Yetunde Kayode, for allegedly tricking her friend into the hands of a 10-man gang of rapists. .

The culprits allegedly raped the victim as part of the ritual to initiate her into an occult group. Yetunde, who was arrested in Ijero Ekiti few days ago, was accused of specialising in recruiting vulnerable girls for the gang to rape, particularly members of Ave cult. .

According to a detective, part of the initiation process is that female students are blindfolded and gang-raped by cult members. “They are thereafter warned to shut their mouth as initiates or risk losing their lives. .

But the last victim defied the threat and reported to her parents who informed the police, which led to the arrest of three of the cult members,” he added. A source in the school said many female students had suffered similar fate, but kept their mouths shut to avoid stigmatisation.

Kayode and three of the suspected rapists were among the 26 suspects paraded on Wednesday by the Commissioner of Police in Ekiti, Wilson Inalegwu.

POLICEMEN GUN DOWN ARMED ROBBER, DURING A ROBBERY OPERATION AT A BANK IN OWERRI, IMO STATE

No fewer than three people have been killed and several others wounded including a police officer, after unknown gunmen suspected to be armed robbers attacked a Zenith bank branch in Owerri, the Imo state capital.
Eye witness accounts say the armed robbers, numbering about 12, invaded the bank at about 2:00 pm on Wednesday and shot sporadically into the air to scare customers away after over-powering the security operatives on duty.

The men were also said to have carted away a yet to be disclosed amount of money.
So far, three people who are yet to be identified, have been confirmed dead after the operation which lasted several hours.
Confirming the incident, the Imo State Police Public Relations Officer Andrew Enwerem, said the command is however on top of the situation.
According to him, one of the armed robbers who was shot by the police, as well as other people who were wounded at the scene, have been transferred to the Federal Medical Centre Owerri for immediate treatmen

EFCC ARRAIGNS BABALAWO (NATIVE DOCTOR) FOR N2.5M FRAUD

The EFCC, on Wednesday, February 22, 2017 arraigned one Bala Tangalu before Justice A. B. Mohammed of the Federal Capital Territory High Court sitting in Jabi, Abuja, on a 2-count charge of conspiracy and obtaining by false pretence to the tune of N2.5m.

Tangalu was arrested following a petition by one Dozie Ugonna, who alleged that he was scammed of over N2.5m by the accused and his cohorts. According to the petitioner, the money was meant for the purchase of materials to neutralize some harmful charms purportedly contained in a carton filled with U.S dollars. 

The accused person pleaded not guilty to the charge. Justice Mohammed granted him bail in the sum of N2m with two sureties in like sum.

WHY I DUMPED MY FOUR-MONTH-OLD BABY UNDER OSHODI BRIDGE – 18-YEAR-OLD MOM

The Lagos State Task Force says its men have rescued a four- month-old baby boy put in a bag and dumped under the bridge in Oshodi area of the state. The Chairman of the outfit, SP Olayinka Egbeyemi, told newsmen in Ikeja that the enforcement team of the Task Force rescued the baby while on duty in the area. 

Egbeyemi said that the 18-year-old mother of the baby was arrested by an official of the force when she was running away after dumping the baby. He said that during an investigation, the mother confessed that she dumped the baby because she could no longer take care of him.

“We have briefed the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr Fatai Owoseni, about the incident and he has directed that the baby and his mother be immediately transferred to Social Welfare Department of the Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social Development,’’ Egbeyemi said.

The mother told newsmen that she decided to dump the baby when none of her family members was ready to accommodate and help her. “My mother sent me out because I could not identify the man who impregnated me. I had sex with different men,” she said. According to her, she dropped out of school in JSS II, due to poverty.

The Federal High Court in Lagos on Wednesday restrained Senator Stella Oduah, along with Sea Petroleum and Gas Company Limited and its directors, from making any withdrawals from the account of the company.

The order is in connection with an issue before the court of their indebtedness of over $16.4 million and N100.4 million. The court also forbade them from withdrawing any funds from the accounts of three other companies in 21 commercial banks listed before it.

The order of the court follows an affidavit sworn to by the business manager of Maritime of Sterling Bank, Segun Akinsanya, and filed and argued before the court by a Lagos lawyer, Kemi Balogun. 

.

.

In the affidavit, Akinsanya averred that on October 8, 2012, the bank granted a lease/cabotage vessel finance facility to Sea Petroleum and Gas Company in the sum of $10,069,620.25 to finance one unit 5,000MT tanker vessel.

.

.

The loan was secured by unconditional personal guarantee of the company’s director, Ms. Oduah, supported by a statement of her net worth, legal mortgage of two properties worth N135million, power of Attorney of the tanker vessel in favour of Sterling Bank and a fully executed and irrevocable standing payment order and tripartite remittance agreement between First Bank, Sterling Bank and Ms. Oduah.

It was further averred that between June 27, 2013 Sea Petroleum Company requested for and was granted additional facilities in the sum of $449,600, $642,954.00 and $350,000.

According to the affidavit, upon the persistent failure of the defendants to liquidate their indebtedness, Sterling Bank instructed the law firm of Oluwakemi Balogun to recover the debt.
