ETISALAT PULLS OUT OF NIGERIA, GIVES 3-WEEK ULTIMATUM FOR A NAME CHANGE

Telecoms group Etisalat has terminated a management agreement with its Nigerian arm and given the business time to phase out the Etisalat brand in Nigeria, the chief executive of Etisalat International told Reuters on Monday.

Nigerian regulators intervened last week to save Etisalat Nigeria from collapse after talks with its lenders to renegotiate a $1.2 billion loan failed.
.
.
Etisalat, with a 45 percent stake in the Nigerian business, said in June it had been ordered to transfer its shares to a loan trustee after the talks had failed.
.
.
CEO of Etisalat International Hatem Dowidar said all UAE shareholders of Etisalat Nigeria, including state-owned investment fund Mubadala, had exited the company and left the board and management.
.
.
He said in an interview with Reuters discussions were ongoing with Etisalat Nigeria to provide technical support, adding that it could continue to use the brand for another three-weeks before phasing it out.

BRIDE DRIVES HER GROOM TO THEIR WEDDING VENUE, IN A BUS WHERE THEY FIRST MET

Wu Zheng, a Chinese bride, has decided to get behind the wheels of a bus, and drive her husband to the wedding venue. Wu Zheng is a bus driver and it was aboard the coach that she met Mr. Right.

The bus Wu operated on her wedding day is the same she drives on daily basis. But the vehicle is more than Wu’s “office.” “It’s more like a relative to me,” she said, “I wanted it to witness my big day.”
.
Her move is also a way to steer attention for environmental protection by driving away from the ostentatious wedding convoys, Wu added.

PARENTS LAMENT TORTURE OF 11-YEAR-OLD PUPIL AT COMMAND SCHOOL

Barely nine months into his stay at the Command Secondary School, Ibadan, Oyo State, an 11-year-old JSS 1 pupil, Israel Dada, is down with illness after alleged serial torture in the hands of senior pupils of the school, Punchng reports.
.
.
It was learnt that each time they were punished by the senior pupils, they would be threatened with stiffer punishment if the torture was reported to the school authorities and their parents.
.
.
It was gathered that matter came to a head on Friday, June 23, when Israel’s father was called on the telephone to come and pick his ailing son. Hitherto chubby Israel was said to have grown lean and had to be rushed to a hospital, where he was admitted and given medication.
.
.
Israel explained that three days before he fell sick, one Stephen, his hostel mate, who was in SSS I, had complained about a missing wristwatch and summoned all the junior pupils, including him. The victim said Stephen flogged them when he could not find the wristwatch on time.
.
.
He said, “He later found the wristwatch. Apart from him, other senior pupils, usually beat us. At times they would punish us because we didn’t greet them.”
.
.
The father, Olushola Dada, said apart from the illness, he had observed that his son was depressed. “He removed his clothes and was going to take a bath when his mother saw scars on his back. He was beaten up as if he was a thief,” the father said.
.
.
Israel’s mother, Olasunkanmi Dada, said she was furious when she saw the scars, adding that the matter had been formally reported to the school management.
.
.
The Vice Principal of the school, Mr. James Olatunde, who confirmed the torture, said Stephen had been punished and sent to a ‘guardroom’ to serve as a deterrent to other senior pupils.

.
.
More than 250 friends and family – including some of football’s biggest names – jetted to Argentina, to watch the sporting star, 30, marry Antonella Roccuzzo, 29, at the plush hotel complex as an alleged family feud threatened to overshadow the day
The couple, who have known each other for some 25 years, banned mobile phones at the event. Staff were also sworn to secrecy and 450 police officers were drafted in for the big day.
.
.
Samuel Eto’o was the first guest to walk along the red carpet and past the world’s press, followed by Aguero and girlfriend Karina, Cesc Fabregas and fiance Daniella Seeman, Antonella’s best friend, and Argentine national team player Ezequiel Lavezzi.
.
.
Barcelona teammate Neymar arrived on his own because, according to Argentinian media, he proposed to girlfriend Bruna Marquezine and she said no.

WHY I’M DEFENDING EVANS – OGUNGBEJE

Lagos lawyer, Olukoya Ogungbeje, has justified his decision to defend suspected billionaire kidnapper, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike, a.k.a. Evans, in court.
.
.
Ogungbeje has come under public criticisms for accepting the brief to seek freedom for Evans or have him charged to court, weeks after his arrest.
.
.
But, speaking with Saturday Sun yesterday, Ogungbeje, accused a section of the media, as well as many Nigerians of being ignorant of the law.
.
.
Citing a judgment delivered by Lord Denning, regarded as the most famous and influential judicial figure of the last century, he noted that it was settled in law that “no matter the bases of the complaints of the cause of your crime, no matter how unpopular is the cause of your crime, no matter how bad is the cause of your crime, the legal practitioner has a duty to take up the cause, if he’s properly briefed and provided that person represents his client within the bounds of law.”
.
.
He added: “That is my answer to your question. So, no matter the public opinion, I have the responsibility to take up the matter. We were properly briefed. So, our action is based on law.
.
.
And we want to represent our client within the bounds of law, within the confines of law. So, if you for instance, you’re a journalist, if you brief me… you don’t want me to take up your cause, because people are saying negative things about you, or because people have condemned you and found you guilty before the media, that I should not take up your case?
.
.
Look, let me tell you right away. We were briefed two weeks ago. And I told them to give me two weeks to think, whether I would take up the brief or not. I did my consultations.
We consulted even journalists, you can go and make enquiries. I consulted my people. I consulted senior lawyers. So, have I done what is wrong by taking the cause of my clients? Forget what people say in the court of public of opinion.”
