Actor Ramsey Nouah Reveals The Real Reason Behind The Film Industry Not Growing

Actor Ramsey Nouah Reveals The Real Reason Behind The Film Industry Not Growing

Actor, Ramsey Nouah, says despite the massive contribution of the film industry to the nation, taxation is frustrating the sector’s growth.

Speaking as a panelist at the tax forum for start-ups and SMEs in Abuja, the actor said the Federal Inland Revenue (FIRS) should come up with a viable taxation structure to keep the industry from collapse.
According to him, “Taxation is inevitable. I support it, but right now Nollywood is heavily taxed.  The equipment we use, whether old or new are heavily taxed.
“The industry is not yet self-sustaining. Yet we are slammed with taxes. The practitioners are taxed, the distributors are taxed.
“The Bank of Industry (BOI) pumped some money to expand the horizons of cinemas in Nigeria, quite commendable but it’s still too small.”
According to the Cable News MI Abaga, rapper and president of Chocolate City, said the Nigerian music scene grew without government investment, hence there was the need to ensure the industry does not collapse under prohibitive taxes.
He said, “I have been paying my tax in Lagos for five years, taxation is necessary. But we can’t kill the citizens to save government just as we can’t kill government to save citizens. At present, the music scene is still evolving, it’s not yet financially literate to deal with issues like full taxation.
“We have a generation of youth that feels short-changed by corruption in public life; music has become an avenue for them to feel a sense of fulfillment. We have to find a middle-line that will benefit us all.
“At Chocolate city, we are in the business for the love of the people, not just for making money.”
Femi Edgar, the special assistant to the executive chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), said Nigeria has one of the lowest tax ratio to GDP, hence the need to ensure Nigerians become tax compliant at all levels.
The tax forum was organized by Play Network, a business and networking establishment.

6 Interesting Things That Happened On Day 43 At The BB Naija House

6 Interesting Things That Happened On Day 43 At The BB Naija House

Day 43 had BB Naija 2018 housemate Alex mourning the eviction of her romantic partner Leo, also the head of house challenge had a surprising twist as the least expected person as the head of house and the nominations took a different angle with Big Brother’s latest rule.

These are the interesting things that happened on day 43 at the BB Naija 2018 house.

The Flame of Love

Alex has been one of the liveliest Housemate in the Double Wahala House, bringing her youthful, joyful and playful self to the game. Her childlike personality has allowed her to always stay true to herself, and never find herself in situations she couldn’t stomach. It is true that Alex can cry for Africa, but when she laughs, the world laughs with her. Alex’s colorful hairstyles and electric smile made her impossible to miss, and incredibly hard to not get attached to. When Alex entered the House she rocked a green short hairstyle and blue lipstick and made no attempt whatsoever to hold her sharp tongue.
With her no-nonsense attitude, she has never hesitated to put people in their place, like she did with Cee-C and Princess. With equally hot-headed Housemates, Alex had struggled to keep her temper under wraps. It was only until Biggie paired her with Leo that another side of her emerged. Although the chemistry between her and Leo lit up the screen, theirs was quite an odd relationship. Leo had made it no secret that he found her too immature for his liking, and acted more like a protective older brother whose calming presence reassured her. However, things took a turn, and their romance has grown.
Alex was the young, ‘feisty girl in the House’, and it is only Leo who has tamed her confrontational nature. They have locked lips several times, slept in the same bed and were practically glued to each other whilst in the House. Bringing out a softer side in Alex. His Eviction last night has left her in shambles, crying way into the night and at different points this morning. There is much more to Alex than what meets the eye. With Leo gone, will she be able to rise from the ashes and find herself, and play the game she came to play?

The Head Of House Games

Housemates had gathered in the Arena to contest for the prized Head of House crown and all the privileges that come with it, such as the luxury bedroom suite and the ultimate freedom to boss everyone around as they pleased.
To qualify for the challenge, Housemates had to put a ping pong ball into cups using a measuring tape. All lined-up and focused on the small round ball, the four ladies went in first. No one had time to feign surprise when Nina and Cee-C were announced as qualified, for the astonishment was genuine. Cee-C, in particular, was elated for this could be her second win in the House, after her landmark Arena Games victory. As for Nina, she seemed genuinely taken aback and sported the biggest grin to date. When their turn came, the four guys rose the challenge and in one swoop, hit the balls right in the cups.

Star-Crossed Lovers

As much as Cee-C and Nina’s qualification felt like a bombshell when Biggie announced that Miracle and Tobi had qualified for the challenge, it was another mood altogether. For a start, this meant that Tobi may – for the fourth time – take the lead, be the voice, and the Head of the House. Should Miracle win, it would be the second time that he sits in the Chair. Still, whether it is Biggie or the stars that are smiling upon these four Housemates, one cannot stop but wonder what part of the victory would go to their heads? After all, this would mean the familiar return of Mina (Miracle-Nina) and Ceebi (Cee-C-Tobi) to the scene on one hand and also affect the growing Tobi and Miracle bromance.
If we didn’t believe in the ‘the first will be last and the last first’ philosophy, it’s safe to say that we do now because Nina has gone against all the odds and managed to bag her very first win in the House; a win that happens to be the most important.

Not All is Fair in Warfare

We can’t necessarily use the word ‘fair’ to describe Nina’s share of the unlucky end of the stick because compared to the other Housemates, she’s had to swallow a whole lot more. If she wasn’t under constant surveillance, we’d attribute her victory to a couple of burnt offerings and maybe a few weeks of dry fasting because it was not expected at all. Her thirst for the win was demonstrated when she had an emotional break down during one of her diary sessions, complaining about her lack of luck. However, the Universe definitely conspired in her favor and brought her the win on a silver platter; bruising the puffed Tobi’s ego, pulling the rug from under Cee-C and denting Miracle’s confidence.
Earlier, Biggie also amended the Head of House competition by removing Immunity and Veto Power to save and replace. Instead, he introduced four Chance Cards, each with different possible outcomes that the future Head of House would find in the glass booth.
If the saying ‘change is the only constant’ wasn’t relevant before, saying it is now would be a complete understatement because that’s all we’re being served today.

Pairs Dissolved

At last, well at least some of them, the pairs have been dissolved and Housemates get to stand alone and balance their own bridges. They were all clearly hit hard by the almost completely random pairing. With each focused on their individual games and low key backdoor plotting; having to tone it down and share both the grace and the disgrace threw them off and laid them in the comfort zones from which they refused to exit in the past few weeks. The weaker threads depended on their strong links and this whole dynamic was the reason for the internal wars the Housemates have been having. Now that they’ve been freed from the burden of being ‘their brothers’ keepers’, the Nominations promise to be more strategy than empathy; cutthroat and downright dirty.

The Nominations

We can’t tell whether the fast pace at which the Nominations took place is owed to the Housemates’ release from the pair prison or to the fact that Biggie drove his own wagon; with Rico Swavey as an exception, the Housemates matched the wagon’s speed and fired away, Nominating their adversaries. Seeing as the process wasn’t coordinated, the results came as a shocker and Housemates were finally given the right of passage to reveal what they thought of each other, in Nomination form of course. The results saw more than three-thirds of the House closer to the chopping board. All but HoH Nina and Rico Swavey are up for Eviction and this is how it went down:
Anto  chose Teddy A and Alex
Rico Swavey Chose Cee c and Miracle
Cee C chose Alex and Anto
Tobi chose Teddy A and Bambam
Miracle chose Cee C and Lolu
Bambam chose Tobi and Anto
Alex chose Bambam and Cee C
Lolu chose Rico Swavey and Bambam
Teddy A chose Tobi and Miracle
Nina chose Bambam and Lolu
The day should officially be renamed and ‘Dissolved’ would be a fitting replacement. The HoH privileges have also been sifted and awarded in very small portions. Instead of the normal Save and Replace, reigning queen Nina had to make do with just the Immunity, thanks to the Chance Card she picked, ‘Immunity from Nominations Only – No Save and Replace’. The games have finally begun.

Chimamanda Adichie Honoured By New York Times As An Author That Shapes The World Of Writing

Chimamanda Adichie Honoured By New York Times As An Author That Shapes The World Of Writing

Chimamanda Adichie‘s Americanah has been selected by the New York Times’s staff book critics as one of “15 remarkable books by women that are shaping the way we read and write fiction in the 21st century.”
This list of fiction books, each of which features a woman at its center, was compiled to mark Women’s History Month.
According to the New York Times,
The books steering literature in new directions — to new forms, new concerns — almost invariably have a woman at the helm, an Elena Ferrante, a Rachel Cusk, a Zadie Smith.
For Women’s History Month, The Times’s staff book critics — Dwight Garner, Jennifer Szalai and myself, Parul Sehgal — sat down together to think about these writers who are opening new realms to us, whose books suggest and embody unexplored possibilities in form, feeling and knowledge.
As we put together a reading list, we introduced a few parameters, for sanity’s sake. We confined ourselves to books written by women and published in the 21st century. And we limited our focus to fiction, but not without some grief.”
This is the review of her book.

Americanah’ by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

If you were paying attention, you might have seen this book coming. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s first novel, “Purple Hibiscus,” was longlisted for the Man Booker Prize. Her second, “Half of a Yellow Sun,” won the Orange Prize. In 2008, she was awarded a MacArthur “genius” grant. But “Americanah” more than paid off on this writer’s promise. It’s a resonant and fiercely intellectual novel about a Nigerian woman named Ifemelu who leaves Africa for America and suffers here before starting a blog called “Raceteenth or Various Observations About American Blacks (Those Formerly Known as Negroes) by a Non-American Black” and winning a fellowship at Princeton. Adichie works both high and low; she’s as adept at dissecting internet and hair salon culture as she is at parsing the overlapping and ever-changing meanings of class and race in the United States. “Americanah” brings news, on many fronts, about how a new generation of immigrants is making its way in the world. It has lessons for every human about how to live. — Dwight Garner
